The Flower of Hawaii | Theater Review | Chicago
A Podcast Theater Review by Reno Lovison: The storyline of the jazz operetta “The Flower of Hawaii” written in 1931 by Paul Abraham and translated by Hersh Glagov is farcical, campy and largely inconsequential. Individual performances are what is important in this production, and this talented Chicago revival cast does not disappoint.
An American premiere presented by “Folks Operetta” as part of their “Reclaimed Voices Series” giving voice to Jewish composers and librettists who were persecuted, exiled or perished at the hands of the German Third Reich, features tenor Rodell Rosel as Prince Lilo-Taro (seen recently in Turando at The Lyric Opera of Chicago ) and Chicago soprano Marisa Buchheit (former Ms. Illinois 2014 who recently earned her M.M. in opera from DePaul University) as Princess Laia is at Stage 773 on Belmont through July 14, 2019.
