Podcast Book Review of “1968 The Year That Rocked the World”

Those of us coming of age in the late sixties did perhaps believe it was “the dawning of the Age of Aquarius” and indeed hoped that “peace would guide the planets and love would steer the stars.” Chicago experienced a violent protest at the Democratic

Scat/Rap at Green Mill

Scat/Rap at Green Mill

The legendary and picturesque Green Mill Cocktail Lounge just off the corner of Lawrence and Broadway in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood is known for its poetry and jazz, making it the perfect venue for flutist and word artist Janice Misurell-Mitchell.

This particular performance occurred on February 19. 2020 but is indicative of the diverse entertainment happening at locations all around the city.

Misurell-Mitchell teaches about music and politics and contemporary music at the School of the Art Institute, and this particular piece, which she describes as scat/rap, aptly reflects the intersection of these seemingly diverse disciplines.

“Mother Wit” a Chicago Short Story Podcast by Venice Johnson

“Mother Wit” a Chicago Short Story Podcast by Venice Johnson

Retired from the Chicago Park District where she taught writing and theater arts at Berger Park on the lakefront in Edgewater, Venice Johnson is currently living in Rogers Park on the far north side of the city.

Storytelling comes naturally to this westside native whose father and grandmother were also accomplished, raconteurs.

In this short story, MOTHER WIT, Venice shares a tale told by her grandmother that includes an old-school lesson about maintaining a mutually beneficial romantic relationship.

It is also an illustration of oral history and intergenerational interaction.

We are planning to include more Chicago short stories as part of our regular podcast series and expect to hear more from Venice about her experiences as a lifelong resident of the city.
