SIX Wives Rock the Pier

The Chicago Shakespeare Theater on Chicago’s Navy Pier presents the Vegas-like pop-concert musical “Six” by Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss featuring the story of the six wives of Henry VIII in song. “Divorced, Beheaded, Died; Divorced, Beheaded, Survived” is the leitmotif of the opening number,

The Flower of Hawaii | Theater Review | Chicago

The Flower of Hawaii | Theater Review | Chicago

A Podcast Theater Review by Reno Lovison: The storyline of the jazz operetta “The Flower of Hawaii” written in 1931 by Paul Abraham and translated by Hersh Glagov is farcical, campy and largely inconsequential. Individual performances are what is important in this production, and this talented Chicago revival cast does not disappoint.

An American premiere presented by “Folks Operetta” as part of their “Reclaimed Voices Series” giving voice to Jewish composers and librettists who were persecuted, exiled or perished at the hands of the German Third Reich, features tenor Rodell Rosel as Prince Lilo-Taro (seen recently in Turando at The Lyric Opera of Chicago ) and Chicago soprano Marisa Buchheit (former Ms. Illinois 2014 who recently earned her M.M. in opera from DePaul University) as Princess Laia is at Stage 773 on Belmont through July 14, 2019.

Throwback Thursday Chicago Loop Street Scene Circa 1970

This video of a dubbed 8mm film was posted on youtube as being Chicago 1960’s but judging by the warm weather clothing and the fact that “Beyond the Valley of the Dolls” was released in June 1970 likely this was shot around that time. This is

THE MEMO Offers a Cautionary Message

THE MEMO Offers a Cautionary Message

The Organic Theater Company’s presentation of “The Memo” is an absurdist black comedy that might be described as Monty Python meets “Office Space” in the “Twilight Zone.” The show runs through June 16, 2019, at the Greenhouse Theater Center on Lincoln Avenue in Chicago. “The

Augie March is Free-Style Chaos

Augie March is Free-Style Chaos

I love the Court Theater in Hyde Park, the cast was outstanding as usual, and I really wanted to love this play.

In spite of my tepid “somewhat recommend” I did not dislike “The Adventures of Augie March” playing through June 9, 2019.

Basically, I just felt like it was a lot to consume, it was a bit chaotic and it did not feel fresh.

Raven Theatre Presents “Undeniably” Good Play

Raven Theatre Presents “Undeniably” Good Play

“THE UNDENIABLE SOUND OF RIGHT NOW” at the Raven Theatre really resonated with me.

Maybe it was because of the business point-of-view representing an aging business owner reluctant to pass the baton to the younger generation or maybe because of the all to close-to-home conflicts resulting from neighborhood gentrification.

Possibly it was the musical aspect of people trying to express themselves and share their emotions through the art form they love.

As a Chicagoan, I appreciated the allusion to “house music” that has its roots in Chicago.

No doubt all of this was enhanced by the very good performances of a nearly perfect ensemble.

On stage through June 16, 2019.
