‘La Ruta’ A Desperate Journey

“A Midsummer Night’s Dream” Chicago Review

“A Midsummer Night’s Dream” Chicago Review

“A Midsummer Night’s Dream” puts a contemporary twist to an old favorite at Chicago Shakespeare Theater on Chicago’s Navy Pier through January 27, 2019. Call the Box Office 312-595-5600 or visit Chicagoshakes.com for ticket information.

Update Note: Though the Reader, Tribune, and WTTW reviews all rated this production as “Somewhat Recommend” I went with “Highly Recommend” for much the same reason.  Where they kinda felt it was over-the-top I felt that the extravagance is what made it fun and perhaps appealing to a more general audience.

This is clearly not an academic or traditionally faithful version of the story but I felt it may be more approachable for those who may be new to Shakespeare or otherwise be somewhat intimidated.

In the meantime, a more traditional Shakespeare enthusiast might find this approach charming and thought-provoking in an alternative way.

This is an interesting film to video of a train ride from Chicago to Kenosha from the 1920’s evidently unearthed from the Huntly Film Archives. Film equipment was not exactly portable in at this time so this is something of a treasure to see riders

Winter WonderFest | Navy Pier

Winter WonderFest | Navy Pier

We had a great time visiting the Winter WonderFest at Navy Pier.

Though it is geared primarily toward the little ones there is plenty of fun for the whole family.

Essentially this is an indoor carnival. The brochure claims “thrills without the chills.”

A chance to get off the couch and do something together as a family, great date for teens, or just another nice way to enjoy a trip to Navy Pier.

The Fifth Third Bank WinterWonderFest is at the West end of Navy Pier on the Lakefront at Illinois Street through January 6, 2019.

‘It’s A Wonderful Life’ Review | American Blues Theater Chicago

‘It’s A Wonderful Life’ Review | American Blues Theater Chicago

If you’re ready to get into the Christmas spirit you can’t do much better than the American Blues Theater’s staged radio show version of Frank Capra’s classic “It’s a Wonderful Life.”

In this production, the theater is set up to give the illusion that you are part of the studio audience for a live radio broadcast in 1944 at WABT Studio on Belmont Avenue in Chicago.

This is a bona fide radio-style performance with each person playing several characters using different voices aided by sound effects that augment the dialog in lieu of visual cues.

Above the piano is a lighted sign which displays the words “On Air” and “Applause.”

This story needs little description for those familiar with the movie starring James Stewart, Donna Reed, and Lionel Barrymore.

‘Arcadia’ at Greenhouse Chicago Review

‘Arcadia’ at Greenhouse Chicago Review

Production photo: Tom McGrath, TCMcG Photography

At its core, Arcadia by Tom Stoppard is a comedic drawing room mystery, but it is also a thought-provoking exploration of humanity through concepts of truth, chaos versus order, discovery and rediscovery, the meaning of time, and our desire to improve on an

already perfect universe.

Performances at Greenhouse Theater Center, 2257 N. Lincoln Avenue, Chicago runs through December 16, 2018.
